The practical answers

Where can I play
Here, on this page, or in the full-screen version. Nothing is gated behind an account.
How does it work
You create a cadet, enter the valley, and make two or three choices at each scene. Six hidden figures move as you play, the run is seeded, and an outcome resolves at the end.
Book or game, what is the difference
The book is thirteen short stories by Rebecca Yarros, one per character. This is an unofficial game about the same rite, with an invented cadet and an algorithm we wrote.
What is Dragonkind
The official interactive dragon experience from Yarros Ink, Inc. at dragonkind.com. It requires an account, and its contents are not publicly documented.
Can I play without signing up
Yes. There is no account, no email capture and no payment anywhere in this game.
What do I get
An outcome and a result card. If a dragon chooses you, the card carries its name, colour, tail, temperament, age, rarity, bond strength and a share code.
Can I replay
Immediately, as often as you like. Each run uses a new seed, so the same choices can produce a different dragon.

How a run works

It starts with a cadet dossier. Name, pronouns, wing, section, squad, year, weapon and one personal trait. The wing assignment is generated, and it is a game convenience, not a claim about how the college sorts its first-years.

Then the valley. A run moves through a sequence of scenes, each with two or three choices. The choices move courage, instinct, cunning, loyalty, aggression and patience, and some scenes lean towards a particular colour. The game never tells you a number. The feedback arrives as narration or as the dragon you meet.

At the end the engine scores the colours and the tails separately, applies the run seed and the day's valley conditions, and resolves an outcome. A bond produces a result card. A rejection or a burn does not, and the run can be restarted at once. Every attempt, bond or burn is kept in your record, on this device.

The book and this game

Threshing Day, the book

  • Thirteen short stories by Rebecca Yarros, one per character.
  • Arranged by year, framed as testimony gathered later by two Basgiath professors.
  • Published by Red Tower Books on 29 September 2026, 224 pages.
  • All thirteen stories are rider point of view. There are no dragon narrators.
  • Not Book 4, and not a novella.

This game

  • One invented cadet, one run, four to eight minutes.
  • Choices decide; a seeded algorithm resolves the rest.
  • Result card with colour, tail, temperament, rarity and bond strength.
  • Rarity and temperament are site-game inventions.
  • No text, artwork or outcome is taken from the book or from Dragonkind.

What Dragonkind is, briefly

Dragonkind is the official interactive experience for the series, at dragonkind.com, operated by Yarros Ink, Inc. and credited to Rebecca Yarros for story, Infantree for the website, Andreas Rocha for background art and Arancia Studio for dragon art.

How it works, what happens after a burn, and what a completed run produces are all Not yet established in public. Nothing about its mechanics is described on this page, because nothing about them is verifiable. The Dragonkind page on this site sets out exactly what is and is not on the record.

Questions people actually ask

Only one Empyrean interactive experience is official, and it is dragonkind.com, operated by Yarros Ink, Inc. Everything else, including this site, is independent fan work.

No. It is an independent fan project about Threshing Day. It is not affiliated with Rebecca Yarros, Red Tower Books, Entangled Publishing or Dragonkind.

No. The game is a web page that runs in the browser, with no install step and no app store listing.

Yes. There is no charge for the run and no paid tier, and the site does not gate the result behind anything.

Yes. The run is built to be played on a phone screen first, and the layout reflows to a single column rather than requiring a desktop.

Dragonkind is the official experience and its contents are not publicly documented. This site is an independent run that explains its own mechanics openly, labels every dragon fact with a source, and lets you play without an email address.
